Gibco ™
Drosophila S2 cells are used in the
DrosophilaM expression system (DES™) for heterologous protein expression. The S2 cell line is derived from a primary culture of late embryonic stages (20–24 h old) of
Drosophila melanogaster. Many features of the S2 cell line suggest that it is derived from a macrophage-like lineage. S2 cells were grown as loose semi-adherent monolayers in tissue culture flasks at room temperature in ambient CO
2 and then cultured in suspension in spinners and shake flasks. Features of
Drosophila S2 cells (frozen in Gibco™ Schneider Medium):
• Can express proteins transiently or by generating stable cell lines
• Tested for quality and performance

Proteins can be expressed transiently or by generating stable cell linesDrosophila S2 cells can be transfected with recombinant expression vectors alone for transient expression studies, or with Choose a vector combination (such as
pCoHygro or
pCoBlast) for generating stable cell lines. A variety of DES™ kits are available to express your recombinant protein of interest in S2 cells.
Quality and Performance TestingEach batch of Gibco™ S2 cells was tested for cell growth and cell viability after cryogenic storage and recovery. In addition, the master seed bank has been tested for bacterial, yeast, mycoplasma, and viral contamination and has been characterized by isozyme and ribotyping analyses.
